Carotenoids are a group of natural colorants found in many plants and fruits. They give these plants their characteristic yellow, orange and red color. The best-known carotenoids include beta-carotene, lycopene and lutein. Beta-carotene is particularly important as it can be converted into vitamin A by the body. Vitamin A, in turn, is essential for healthy skin, good eyesight and a strong immune system. These carotenoids are mainly found in carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach and mangoes. The carotenoid lycopene is primarily known for its antioxidant properties. It protects cells from damage caused by free radicals and could therefore have a positive influence on the prevention of cancer and heart disease. It is mainly found in tomatoes, watermelons and grapefruits. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found mainly in green vegetables such as spinach, kale and broccoli. They are important for good eye health and can reduce the risk of macular degeneration, an age-related eye disease. Carotenoids are not only responsible for the color of plants and fruits, but also for their health benefits. A balanced diet with a variety of fruit and vegetables is therefore important in order to benefit from the positive properties of carotenoids.
