rubyni Selenium: An important building block for your body

Has your hair been looking thinner lately, are your nails brittle? Do you feel tired and exhausted quickly or do you lack the right appetite when eating? Then your body may be lacking a certain trace element: selenium.

Selenium plays an important role in the health of your hair and nails. Moreover, it is not only essential for the thyroid gland: if it does not have enough selenium available, this can lead to hypothyroidism. Last but not least, your body needs the vital substance to protect its cells and keep your immune system strong.

  • Contributes to normal thyroid function 1,2,3
  • Keeps hair and nails healthy 5
  • Helps as a building block to protect the body’s cells from oxidative stress 1,2,3
  • Is a basic element for a good immune system 1,2,4
  • 100 % vegetable selenium from sunflower seeds
  • naturally bound selenium that is readily available to the body
  • 1 capsule provides 55 µg selenium
  • Vegan, lactose- and gluten-free, 100% organic

How much selenium does your body need?

Selenium is a trace element. This means that your body only needs small amounts of the vital substance – but these are essential and must be supplied regularly. But what quantities are involved?

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) gives certain estimated values for selenium. This means that it assumes that the human body is sufficiently supplied with the trace element at this level. According to the DGE, women need 60 micrograms (µg) of selenium per day. For men, it is 70 micrograms per day. Those who are breastfeeding should consume 75 micrograms of selenium per day.3

The European Union (EU) recommends the same amount of selenium for both sexes: 55 micrograms per day. This is the so-called nutrient reference value (NRV for short). This is used as a guide in the manufacture of food supplements when it comes to the dosage of vitamins and minerals.6

Important: Just like an undersupply, an oversupply of selenium can also have a negative effect on your health. Possible symptoms include nausea or nerve disorders.2

All about our capsules

But how much selenium does the population actually consume? The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has calculated this. It looked at the average intake in various European countries – and came up with an amount of between 31 and 66 micrograms of selenium per day for adults.2

One rubyni selenium capsule provides you with 55 micrograms of this important trace element. The amount corresponds to exactly 100% of the daily selenium requirement according to the nutrient reference value (NRV*).

Recommended intake: Take one capsule daily with plenty of water and without chewing.

Recommended daily intake: Do not exceed the recommended daily intake.

rubyni selenium at a glance: What’s in our capsules

rubyni Selenium is a dietary supplement with vegan selenium from a natural source.

Ingredients:

  • Organic sunflower seed extract (from Helianthus annuus, 0.5% selenium)
  • Organic carrot powder
  • Coating agent hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (plant-based capsule shell),

The selenium in our capsules is naturally bound. This means that the trace element is embedded in a plant matrix that contains other natural components.7 The main form is selenomethionine. It is considered to be particularly easy to utilize.7 It is said to have good bioavailability, which means that your body can absorb it optimally.

Pack size: 90 capsules – in a tin made from recycled PET.

Note: Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced and varied diet or to replace a healthy lifestyle.

Sustainably grown, gently extracted

The selenium in our rubyni selenium capsules comes from sunflower seeds that are grown sustainably and organically. The extraction is carried out gently using purely natural ingredients. This is the process by which the selenium is extracted from the seeds.

We have combined the trace element in our capsules with freshly harvested organic carrot powder from Germany. It is also sustainably grown and has raw food quality.

Good to know:

Selenium: For the thyroid, beautiful hair and healthy nails

What do you think of when someone tells you about an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism)? The first thing that comes to mind for most people is iodine deficiency. What is less well known, however, is that a lack of selenium also prevents the thyroid gland from working properly. This is because the vital substance is necessary to activate important thyroid hormones.2
Selenium is also a basic building block for your immune system. But the vital substance is also essential for other functions in the body.

Your hair and nails need selenium to grow and stay healthy. This is because thyroid hormones influence hair-forming cells, among other things. A deficiency can cause hair to grow more slowly, become thinner and dull or even fall out.8
Nails also grow more slowly with a selenium deficiency, become brittle and can split or break quickly. Transverse or longitudinal grooves may also appear on the nails.8 Larger white patches often appear.5,9

Selenium supports muscles and protects cells

Selenium also has an effect on your muscles. After all, skeletal muscles contain up to 50 percent of the amount found in your entire body.10 Do you exercise frequently? Then selenium can help your muscles to recover better after exercise.11 A selenium deficiency, on the other hand, can lead to muscle diseases.5
Selenium has an antioxidant effect – just like our berry extracts12 – and can protect body cells from damage caused by so-called free radicals. This protective effect also affects sperm, i.e. male sperm cells. Men who are unable to conceive usually have very low selenium levels.13 They often also lack zinc.14 Taking these two trace elements can help to improve the quantity and motility of sperm cells.15

Selenium-poor soils as a cause of deficiencies

Selenium is found in both animal and plant foods. How much selenium is found in plant foods depends on the content of the soil. In Europe, soils are considered to be low in selenium. This means that plants grown in Germany, for example, contain comparatively little selenium.1,2
This is why people who eat a vegan diet in particular are at an increased risk of selenium deficiency. Unbalanced diets or inflammatory bowel diseases can also lead to an undersupply of this vital substance.5

What are the health benefits of selenium?

The trace element is essential for various vital functions16:
Selenium

  • contributes to normal thyroid function
  • contributes to the maintenance of normal hair
  • contributes to the maintenance of normal nails
  • contributes to the normal function of the immune system
  • contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress

As a biathlete, I have to be fit and able to perform at the drop of a hat. I had big problems with that in the past. My body was repeatedly weakened and I had to put up with many setbacks. When I was looking for a solution to support my immune system in the long term, my naturopath introduced me to elderberries as a superfood, among other things. I now take rubyni® with elderberries every day. The capsules are also super handy when I'm on the World Cup circuit. Rubyni® is a valuable aid for me during stressful competition phases and my immune system is finally back on top form.

Expert in nutritional medicine

For more than 25 years, my focus has been on holistic, naturopathic medicine, with a particular interest in nutritional medicine and biological topics. During this time, I have studied current research findings (e.g. on orthomolecular medicine, epigenetics, nutrigenomics, phytotherapy) in depth. From the outset, I found rubyni's philosophy of using whole fruit extracts with the complete effect profile of the entire fruit matrix exciting and convincing. That is why I was happy to take on the task of developing new products that would contain rubyni but also, in the spirit of synergistic effects, other ingredients for a specific purpose.
