How much vitamin B12 does your body need?
Since the human body cannot produce vitamin B12 on its own, this vitamin must be obtained regularly through the diet. In nature, it is produced by microorganisms and is usually found in significant amounts only in animal-based foods such as meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products.3
But how much of this micronutrient does your body need per day? The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends an estimated daily intake of 4 micrograms (µg) of vitamin B12 for both men and women. Pregnant and breastfeeding women have a higher requirement.
The value set by the European Union (EU) is lower than that of the DGE and stands at 2.5 µg of vitamin B12 per day. This value is known as the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV for short). In the production of dietary supplements, it serves as a guideline for the labeling of vitamins and minerals. 4,5
When might it be a good idea to take a vitamin B12 supplement?
People who follow a vegan diet consume very little or no vitamin B12 from natural foods. Even with a vegetarian diet, vitamin B12 intake depends on the types and amounts of foods consumed.3 In these cases, taking a dietary supplement to increase vitamin B12 intake may be considered.
Even in older age, ensuring an adequate intake of this micronutrient may require special attention. This is because, as we age, the physiological processes involved in the absorption of vitamin B12 can change.6
In addition, individual factors can also influence vitamin B12 intake.3

rubyni® Vitamin B12 at a Glance
rubyni Vitamin B12 is a dietary supplement that contains vitamin B12 from a vegan source. We use the shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes)—which many people know as a tasty edible mushroom used in Asian dishes—as the raw material for our capsules. The vitamin B12 is extracted from the mushrooms through a multi-step process.
The shiitake mushrooms we use for rubyni Vitamin B12 come from northeastern India. They are grown on logs using traditional methods and are 100% organic.
Our product is rounded out with wheatgrass powder (Triticum aestivum) from EU organic farms. It consists of 100% fresh wheatgrass, which is gently cleaned, cut to size, air-dried, and then finely ground.
Good to know:
Vitamin B12: A Nutrient Essential for Numerous Bodily Functions
Vitamin B12 is water-soluble. Unlike many other water-soluble vitamins, your body can store it for a certain period of time—particularly in the liver. It can draw on these stores as needed for various metabolic processes.7 For example, vitamin B12 contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and supports normal mental function.2
However, its role in energy metabolism is somewhat better known: Vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy metabolism and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue. It also supports the formation of red blood cells. These blood cells supply tissues with oxygen, which is necessary for normal energy production in the body’s cells.2,8
What exactly is the “intrinsic factor”?
In order for your body to absorb vitamin B12 from food, it needs what is known as the “intrinsic factor.” This is a protein produced naturally by the body, specifically by a healthy stomach lining. It binds to vitamin B12 and aids in its absorption in the intestines.9
What role does vitamin B12 play in the body (Health Claims)?
Vitamin B12 plays a role in various bodily functions:
Vitamin B12
- contributes to normal energy metabolism
- contributes to the normal function of the nervous system
- contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism
- Contributes to normal mental function
- contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells
- contributes to the normal function of the immune system
- contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- has a function in cell division
What makes rubyni Vitamin B12 so special?

How much Rubyni Vitamin B12 should I take each day?
For adults, we recommend taking one capsule daily with sufficient liquid, without chewing it. One capsule contains 2.5 μg of vitamin B12—which corresponds to 100% of the so-called nutrient reference value for adults as defined by the Food Information Regulation. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake.
Is Rubyni Vitamin B12 vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-free?
Yes, we use purely vegan sources for our rubyni B12: The raw material we use is shiitake mushrooms from northeastern India. These are organic—as is the wheatgrass powder included in the product. The capsule coating is plant-based. The product is therefore 100% vegan. It is also gluten-free and lactose-free.
Which foods contain vitamin B12?
Naturally, this micronutrient is found primarily in animal-based foods such as dairy products, eggs, fish, and meat. For people who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, it can therefore be difficultto meet their needs through diet alone.³ In these cases, taking a vitamin B12 supplement may be advisable.
What role does vitamin B12 play in energy metabolism?
Vitamin B12 plays a role in various bodily functions. For example, it contributes to normal energy metabolism and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue. It also plays a role in the formation of red blood cells, which transport oxygen to the body’s cells.2

As a biathlete, I have to be fit and able to perform at the drop of a hat. I had big problems with that in the past. My body was repeatedly weakened and I had to put up with many setbacks. When I was looking for a solution to support my immune system in the long term, my naturopath introduced me to elderberries as a superfood, among other things. I now take rubyni® with elderberries every day. The capsules are also super handy when I'm on the World Cup circuit. Rubyni® is a valuable aid for me during stressful competition phases and my immune system is finally back on top form.
